George Hargreaves

Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, London, United Kingdom:

This park hosted the London Olympics in 2012. The huge red structure is very industrial and links to the the red poppies planted and the colours of the British flag. From the photos there seems to be a lack of space for pedestrians to walk along and places to sit. The planting is an odd mix of grass, sweeping grasses, flowers and trees which seems to lack direction and a clear theme.

2019 World Horticulture Expo, Beijing, China:

The planting design for this site is very aesthetically pleasing. The curving hedges, sweeps of different plants and colours, and curved benches create an inviting space. The bordering of the site with trees creates an enclosed feel.

Peter Walker

'Born in Pasadena and raised in Berkeley, California, Walker studied landscape architecture at University of California, Berkeley, and earned an M.L.A. from Harvard’s Graduate School of Design. His landscapes reflect his knowledge of contemporary art, Modernism, and historical, cultural, and ecological considerations.'

QUZHOU SPORTS CAMPUS:

The sports centre is based around mounds and circular shapes contrasting the very rigid rectangular surrounding buildings and spaces. There are much higher levels of vegetation compared to other sports arena areas for example in Europe.

JEWEL CHANGI AIRPORT:

This incredible design features an indoor waterfall and huge amounts of glass in the structure itself creating a beautiful effect. The tropical rainforest in the glass building creates a magical atmosphere, and the misty pools in the second picture add to this further.

BURNETT PARK

The geometric patterned design creates a regimented yet interesting park design. Different spaces are made for groups of people to enjoy and vegetation is dotted throughout. There is a lot of grass and concrete/paving making it clearly an urban park however the lighting and water features add a sense of magic to the place.

Martha Schwartz

'Martha Schwartz is an American landscape architect and educator. Schwartz is the founding principal of Martha Schwartz Partners, an architecture firm based in London, New York City, and Shanghai. She is also Professor in Practice of Landscape Architecture at the Harvard University Graduate School of Design.' (Wikipedia).

Broward County Civic Arena, Fort Lauderdale, FL, USA:

This design features coloured lighting outside a large public building. The complimentary colours create a cool mood giving the site a modern feel. The lights are a new take on boring street lighting and they almost look like cobwebs from below. They could also be interpreted as trees which makes the site feel slightly more natural despite the clear lack of vegetation.

Vilnius Plaza, Vilnius, Lithuania:



This is an interesting and modern city street layout design. I personally find the stiped paving to lead the visitor through the area, creating a cosmopolitan feel. The lighting adds a great element to the design creating a safe space into the night. The smoothed shapes compliment the vegetation and add to the flow of the design which contrasts the harsh lines of the surrounding buildings.

Zigong Dongxingsi Waterfront, Sichuan, China



The shapes in this orange biophilic design feature are very naturalistic and almost represent a snake travelling along the waterfront. The colour however makes the site stand out in a slightly tacky way during the daytime. The colour gives the feature a harshness which is jarring against the surrounding vegetation and water which is a shame as the area could be a hugely calming and peaceful place.
